Blue Ribbon Sushi has been around for a while but none of the locations are quite like the newest Izakaya style restaurant at the Thompson Hotel in Lower East Side. An izakaya is a type of Japanese drinking establishment which also serves food to accompany the drinks. They are casual places for after-work drinking. So if you are looking for a place to eat and drink before hitting the nyc night scene this is a great choice. There is something about the space and the vibe that keeps the energy level elevated. Not sure how they do it perhaps they pump the air with extra oxygen, whatever it may be I’m certain you will feel like going out after. I say this because I am generally the kinda girl that prefers to recline back for a nap after a meal I, but this night I was rearing to go out and explore.
The six of us were too busy chatting away that we couldn’t really focus on what to order, so we left ourselves in the hands of the wonderful waiter. We ended up ordering a bit of everything…maybe a little too much.
I generally stay far away from fried chicken but since it was on the table I gave it a go. The Fried wasabi honey Chicken (not pictured here) was incredibly rich and crispy! This dish is great for sharing. At the end of the night we still had some remaining.
Braised Short Ribs truff le teriyaki
This dish, like the chicken, was another heavy dish for sharing. Again Delicious!!
I generally can’t hold back from ordering uni when I go out for sushi. It is also a fairly good way to test the quality of the seafood. The Uni at blue Ribbon was fresh and creamy.
We were all in awe when the sushi assortment came out. There was a little of everything on that plank of wood. So much so it was hard to remember all the pieces as the waiter went over it. Overall the quality was pretty good.
Overview: Restaurants are multifaceted creations. Like cooking, they all use different ratios of Food to Environment to Service to create their own unique identity. Sometimes you want to go to a place solely for the food and other times you need a specific environment and vibe to drive the night. Blue Ribbon Izakaya is the latter, and they do it Really well!! (That being said, we would never go to a place solely for environment, the place also has to have good food and service. and Blue Ribbon has that.)
